1831 The French Foreign Legion was established by King Louis-Philippe to support his war in Algeria.


Officially, the Legion has only ever had one female member, Englishwoman Susan Travers.

1876 Alexander Graham Bell made the first successful telephone call by saying: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."

1959 Fearing an abduction attempt by China, 300,000 Tibetans surrounded the Dalai Lama's palace to prevent his removal.

1969 James Earl Ray was jailed for 99 years by a court in Memphis, Tennessee, after admitting he carried out the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. He later retracted his guilty plea.

1977 Astronomers discovered rings around Uranus.


Sir William Herschel announced the discovery of Uranus 13th March 1781, expanding the known boundaries of the Solar System for the first time in modern history.


Uranus was also the first planet discovered with a telescope.

1988 The Prince of Wales narrowly avoided death on the ski slopes of Switzerland in an avalanche which killed one of his closest friends.

1990 A court in Baghdad imposed the death sentence on Iranian-born Observer journalist Farzad Bazoft. He was convicted of spying for Israel while working on a story about an explosion at a weapons complex 48 kilometres south of the capital.

2000 The NASDAQ Composite stock market index peaked at 5132.52, signalling the beginning of the end of the dot-com boom.

2006 The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reached the red planet.

The infamous Wonderbra ‘Hello Boys’ poster, featuring Eva, appeared in an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It was also voted in at number 10 in a ‘Poster of the Century’ contest.
